How to troubleshoot Email Marketing delivery, bounces and unsubscribes

Email activity helps you understand what happened after a campaign was sent, but delivery and engagement are not guaranteed for every address.

If a recipient did not receive the email

  • Confirm the address was included in the selected audience.
  • Check that the contact was subscribed and not suppressed or unsubscribed.
  • Review the campaign status and activity.
  • Ask the recipient to check spam, junk, promotions and filtered folders.
  • Check the address for spelling mistakes.

Bounces

A bounce means the receiving server did not accept the message. A permanent bounce commonly indicates an invalid or unavailable address. A temporary bounce can result from a full mailbox or a temporary receiving-server problem. Do not repeatedly send to an address that continues to fail.

Unsubscribes

When someone unsubscribes, do not add them back merely to send another campaign. Respect the recorded preference unless the person clearly asks to subscribe again through an appropriate process.

Improve future delivery

  • Send only to people who expect to hear from you.
  • Keep the audience current and remove invalid addresses.
  • Use an accurate sender identity and a clear subject line.
  • Avoid misleading wording and excessive frequency.
  • Test links and content before scheduling.

Open and click reporting is useful but not exact: privacy features and email clients can affect what is recorded.
